AI and Georgia’s Labour Market: Which Jobs Will Shrink by 2030

From the current perspective, artificial intelligence will not cause mass unemployment in Georgia. What it will do is shrink the jobs young people use to start a career. The problem is not that work disappears, but that almost no new jobs are being created in Georgia to replace it.

What does it mean that a job is “at risk”?

It does not mean the occupation will disappear. Every job is made up of many different tasks. AI can do some of them, but not all. An accountant may no longer need to fill in spreadsheets by hand, but talking to the client, making the decision and carrying the responsibility still stay with them.

So more often it is not the occupation that changes but the way a person works. The risk appears when one person can do more, and the employer needs fewer staff.

Which jobs will shrink?

First of all, work where most of the day goes on repetitive operations: entering data, preparing documents, first-draft reporting, standard till operations. In practice this means cashiers, office and stock-record clerks, bank tellers, junior accountants and credit officers.

Georgia’s employment distribution across the six occupational categories is structured as follows: rapidly declining office and record-keeping work accounts for 6.3%, gradually declining accounting, finance, and legal fields make up 4.4%, transforming occupations where work changes but demand stays represent 15.9%, stable physical work not exposed to automation holds the largest share at 38.6%, growing sectors such as agriculture, construction, care, and education comprise 34.2%, and the technology frontier of IT, engineering, and data analysis stands at 0.6%.

Which jobs will grow?

Two completely different groups. First, technology: programming, engineering, data analysis. These grow fastest, but in Georgia they are very small. Second, physical and human work: agriculture, construction, care and education. Here AI cannot replace a person, because the work is done by hand and on site.

Why is this a problem for young people?

Because AI takes over the beginner’s work first. A graduate normally starts with exactly those simple, repetitive tasks that AI already does well. If that step disappears, the way into the labour market closes.

The data confirms it: people under 30 are twice as numerous in declining occupations as employed people overall, and almost twice as few in the growing ones.

Does this mean unemployment will rise?

Probably not. It is more likely that young people will simply move abroad. This group, educated and formally employed, finds relocation easiest. So the change will show up in migration statistics rather than in the unemployment rate.

What should an individual actually do?

Three practical takeaways

If you are a student: when choosing a profession, think not only about what you are good at, but also about how much of that job is repetitive operations. The more there are, the faster it will change.

If you work in an office job: more realistic than losing your job is that part of your work becomes automated. It is better to learn to use these tools yourself than to wait until someone else does.

If you are an employer: cutting junior positions saves money in the short term, but in the medium term it breaks the pipeline that produces skilled staff. Someone has to train the experienced employee of the future.

How was the study done?

It uses the primary microdata of Geostat’s Labour Force Survey (58,170 records, 2025). Every occupation was classified under the international ISCO-08 standard and then matched to two global studies: the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2025 and Working Paper 140 of the International Labour Organization (2025).

An important caveat: the global forecasts are applied to Georgia as an assumption, since no Georgian companies took part in that survey. Only one year of data is available, so it is not yet possible to describe the trend over time.
