We Are Already Living in All Three Eras
A letter preserved in a Georgian family archive is more than text. It carries handwriting, paper, an address, a stamp and the history of waiting. The same family now exchanges photos and short videos instantly, and may soon ask an AI assistant to recall an earlier conversation, adapt to a family member’s tone or retrieve a story from a shared archive.
The three eras are therefore not merely historical periods. They are three different answers to a single question: what gives communication meaning? In the material era, meaning came from the object and the wait. In the social-platform era, it came from speed and scale. In the AI era, it may come from context and continuity.
This shift is occurring in a highly connected country. Geostat reported that 92.0% of Georgian households had internet access in 2025 and 87.9% of the population aged six and older had used the internet in the previous three months. Among internet users aged 15 and older, 95.4% used it every day or almost every day. BTUAI’s independently double-checked calculation shows a 7.6-percentage-point gap between urban and rural household internet access. The new communication era is therefore widespread, but it is not arriving under equal conditions for everyone.
The First Era: When Connection Remained in Our Hands
In the material era, the meaning of a message extended beyond its content. Writing, sending, travelling and preserving formed one experience. Distance and delay increased emotional weight because words had to be chosen without the possibility of immediate correction or response.
BTU’s research analysis identifies several defining features: personalization, physical trace, anticipation, durable memory and the significance of space. In Georgia, these features are especially visible in stories of migration, war, student life and family archives. A letter could later become not only family memory but evidence of a historical period.
The weakness of this model was speed and accessibility. The strength was intention: communication was created for a specific person and could survive independently of a platform’s commercial rules.
The Second Era: We Reached Everyone and Lost Attention
Social platforms gave Georgian society unprecedented reach. A family member abroad can be seen every day, a small business can speak directly to customers, and citizens can receive and distribute information instantly. This democratization is real: communication became cheaper, faster and multimedia.
But the same architecture produced a different cost. Communication is often designed for an audience rather than a person. Every post competes with thousands of others. Frequency rises while the time available for each message falls. The archive appears permanent, but often depends on the platform, account and format remaining alive.
Geostat’s 2025 gender statistics show that 96% of female and male internet users aged 15 and older participated in social networks. The figure demonstrates how central platform communication has become in Georgia. It does not, however, measure depth, trust or the individual’s ability to control attention.
The strategic interpretation is that speed did not destroy connection; it changed its economics. Attention became scarce. Georgian businesses, media, universities and public institutions therefore need more than higher posting frequency. They need communication that people can connect to their own lives.
The Third Era: When the System Knows the Previous Conversation
AI-based communication differs from social media because the response is not necessarily prepared for a general audience. A system can account for previous questions, knowledge level, goals, language and preferred tone. Communication becomes an ongoing interaction rather than a one-off message.
The change is already practical. A student can develop a research project over time with the same digital assistant; a customer can receive support that remembers an earlier problem; a company can replace one generic message with a response adapted to a real need. In Georgia, this has an additional condition: if AI cannot understand Georgian language, tone, irony, relationships and cultural reference, personalization will remain superficial or culturally imported.
Depth may return through accumulated context. But this “living memory” is also highly sensitive data. Whoever controls context can provide better help, but can also observe, influence or manufacture a sense of intimacy.
Context Can Support Depth, but It Cannot Replace People
The evidence does not support a simple conclusion that AI either restores or destroys human connection. A four-week controlled study by researchers from MIT Media Lab and OpenAI involved 981 participants and more than 300,000 messages. Experimental conditions alone did not produce a uniform effect, but participants who voluntarily used the chatbot more intensively tended to show worse outcomes in loneliness, emotional dependence and problematic use.
This does not mean AI dialogue is inherently harmful. Outcomes depend on intensity, personal circumstances, design and whether AI strengthens or substitutes real human interaction. The key measure should therefore not be how human the system sounds, but whether it helps people think, prepare for real conversations and retain agency.
UNESCO’s human-centred approach emphasizes privacy, autonomy, transparency and accountability. For Georgia, contextual communication therefore requires rules on what is stored, for how long, who can access it, how memory can be deleted and how users know they are interacting with a system rather than a person.
The Georgian Language Is Either the Opportunity or the Loss
In the material era, Georgian was preserved through handwriting and books. In the platform era, it gained mass digital use, often under global technical rules. The contextual era sets a higher standard: AI must not only recognise Georgian words, but also understand meaning, tone, irony, relationships and cultural signals.
This is a question of digital sovereignty. If Georgian context is underrepresented in datasets, knowledge bases and evaluation systems, users may receive grammatically Georgian but conceptually foreign answers. UNESCO’s 2025 report on AI and culture also highlights the importance of bringing minority languages into digital platforms to preserve cultural knowledge for future generations.
Georgia’s opportunity is to build not only interfaces, but a Georgian digital memory: verified knowledge banks, cultural and educational archives, language resources and governance that keeps people in control of their data.
What the Three Eras Mean for Georgian Organizations
For businesses, the lesson is that customer relationships should not end with a transaction or social-media post. Contextual systems can remember needs and service history, but only if data is accurate, consent is clear and the customer does not feel surveilled.
For universities, the shift is from mass information delivery to continuous support of student development. For government, it means not asking citizens to repeat the same information across services. Media can better understand audiences but must not trap them in personalized information bubbles. Families can use AI to organize letters, photographs and oral histories, but uploading intimate archives to commercial platforms without control creates new vulnerability.
An illustrative Georgian scenario is a university assistant that remembers completed courses and helps plan the next learning step. It does not make final academic decisions, reuse data for unrelated purposes or hide its memory. The student can inspect and delete stored context. In this model, memory increases depth without reducing rights.
BTU Researchers’ Assessment
According to BTU researchers, the three eras are not a sequence of cancellation but an accumulation of capabilities. The material era contributed intention and durable memory; the platform era added scale and access; AI may add context and adaptation. The best future combines all three: communication that is fast but not shallow, personal but not surveillance-based, remembered but under human control, expressed in Georgian and understood through Georgian meaning.
