Electric vehicle imports to Georgia have reached unprecedented levels. According to data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GeoStat), 927 electric vehicles worth a total of $16.388 million were imported into the country during January-February of this year. This figure represents a historic high and is almost 100% higher than the same period last year when only 465 electric vehicles were imported, with a total value of $9.496 million.
The recent trend of increasing electric vehicle imports clearly reflects the growing interest of Georgian consumers in environmentally friendly transportation. When analyzing data from previous years, it becomes evident that the scale of electric vehicle imports has dramatically increased in a short period. For example, during January-February of 2017, only 10 electric vehicles worth a mere $85.3 thousand were imported. By comparison, the current period’s figures are almost a hundred times greater in quantity and nearly two hundred times higher in financial terms.
It is also noteworthy that the average value of imported vehicles has significantly changed over the years. Currently, the average value of an imported electric vehicle is $17.7 thousand, which is relatively lower than last year’s average of $20.4 thousand. This decrease is likely due to increased competition in the electric vehicle market, the expansion of supply channels, and the availability of more affordable models.
The primary source of imported vehicles is the United States, from which 702 units were imported in the first two months of this year, with a total value of $10.261 million. This clearly shows that Georgian consumers prefer electric vehicles from the American market, where the popularity of brands like Tesla, Chevrolet, and Ford plays a crucial role.
The second-largest importing country is China, with 100 electric vehicles worth a total of $2.155 million. Chinese electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the local market due to their attractive price-to-quality ratio. Belgium follows with 40 imported units worth $1.611 million. The import of electric vehicles from the European market is gradually increasing, which is particularly important against the backdrop of Georgia’s economic integration with the European Union.
The last two positions in the top five are held by Japan (35 units worth $239.3 thousand) and Germany (24 units worth $1.303 million). The average value of German electric vehicles is significantly higher than Japanese ones, which is likely due to premium brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
The trend of increasing electric vehicle imports indicates that the culture of environmentally friendly transportation is gradually taking root in Georgia. Moreover, record-high import figures suggest a growing interest among consumers in environmental protection and sustainable development. Additionally, the relatively low average price of imported vehicles is expected to further increase demand and accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles in Georgia.
However, it should be noted that such growth in imports, while having positive effects, also presents certain challenges. For example, it necessitates the adaptation of infrastructure and transportation systems. The rapid spread of electric vehicles will place additional pressure on the electricity supply networks and require the expansion of the charging station network, which will be a significant test for Georgia’s energy system.
