The Increase in the Number of Cars in Georgia and Global Trends

Recently, the number of cars in Georgia has significantly increased. According to official data from the Service Agency, at the beginning of January 2025, there were 1,870,657 registered vehicles in the country. By early March, this figure had risen to 1,886,918. This means that in just two months, the number of cars increased by approximately 16,261 units, which averages to about 8,130 new vehicle registrations per month.

Considering Georgia’s population of approximately 3.5 million people, this means there are about 539 vehicles per 1,000 residents. For comparison, the number of cars per 1,000 residents in some European countries is as follows:

  • Germany: Approximately 580 cars per 1,000 residents;

  • Italy: Approximately 660 cars per 1,000 residents;

  • France: Approximately 600 cars per 1,000 residents;

  • Spain: Approximately 500 cars per 1,000 residents.

These numbers show that Georgia is quite close to developed European countries in terms of the number of vehicles per capita.

Regarding the most registered car brands, according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia, the most popular brands registered in 2024 were:

  • Toyota: 24,330 units;

  • Ford: 18,136 units;

  • Mercedes-Benz: 13,464 units;

  • Hyundai: 7,738 units;

  • BMW: 7,552 units.

In terms of color, the most popular was white (38,472 units), followed by gray (37,755 units) and black (31,539 units).

Globally, the number of cars per capita varies significantly across countries. For example, in the United States, there are approximately 800 cars per 1,000 residents, one of the highest rates in the world. In Japan, this indicator is about 600, while in China, it’s around 200.

The growth in the number of cars in Georgia can be explained by several factors. One of the main factors is economic growth and an increase in citizens’ incomes, which allows more people to purchase their own vehicles. Also, the importation of cars into the country is relatively easy, which contributes to market saturation.

However, the increase in the number of cars comes with certain challenges. First and foremost, it puts a strain on road infrastructure and causes traffic problems, especially in large cities like Tbilisi. Additionally, the environmental impact is growing, requiring the promotion of environmentally friendly transport and the implementation of appropriate policies.
