The Avocado Market Boom: Global Trends and Georgia’s Growing Interest

In recent years, avocado has become one of the most in-demand products, and it’s not just because of its taste. Its unique nutritional value, versatility, and the rising popularity of a healthy lifestyle have secured its place in the global market. Today, avocado is firmly established in the diets of not only Latin America but also Europe, Asia, and other regions. Meanwhile, its consumption in Georgia is growing at a record pace.
The global avocado market has been expanding rapidly for years. In 2023, the market value exceeded $18 billion, and forecasts suggest it will reach $25 billion by 2028. The main driver of production growth is the ever-increasing global demand. Mexico remains the leading producer, cultivating approximately 2.4 million tons of avocados annually. Peru and Colombia are also strengthening their exports, particularly to European and Asian markets.

Avocado prices fluctuate due to seasonality and supply chain changes. For example, in 2023, the average wholesale price per kilogram in the U.S. ranged between $2.6 and $3.5, while in Europe, it reached $3.0 to $4.2. Despite periodic price fluctuations, the long-term trend remains upward, as avocado consumption continues to expand beyond Western countries into Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Georgia is a relatively new but rapidly growing player in the avocado market. In 2015, avocado imports amounted to $179,000, whereas by 2024, this figure had surged to over $4.4 million. The most significant increase in imports has been observed since 2020, reflecting rising consumer demand.
In Georgia, avocado is primarily sold through retail channels and restaurants. Although it is still considered a relatively expensive product, consumers are incorporating it into their diets more frequently, especially for trendy dishes such as guacamole, avocado toast, and salads.
Global projections indicate that the avocado market will continue to grow, and in Georgia, its consumption is likely to accelerate import volumes even further. As a highly nutritious and fashionable product, avocado has already secured its place in Georgia’s food market, and its presence is expected to strengthen in the coming years.
