Georgian Hazelnuts on the Global Market: Challenges and Growth Prospects

Hazelnut production has deep-rooted traditions in Georgia and remains one of the country’s key export products. Over the past decade, export volumes have experienced significant fluctuations, directly impacting both local farmers and the nation’s overall economy.

In 2015, Georgian hazelnut exports reached 176 million USD; however, in the following years, the export figures saw a substantial decline. The period between 2017 and 2018 was particularly challenging, with exports nearly halving due to unfavorable climatic conditions and plant diseases. Nonetheless, recent years have shown steady improvement, and by 2024, Georgian hazelnut exports recovered to 101 million USD (source: Geostat).

In 2024, hazelnuts accounted for approximately 3.5% of Georgia’s total local exports. For a single agricultural product, this represents a notably high share, suggesting Georgia’s relatively strong position in the international market. It’s worth mentioning that nearly 89% of the hazelnut export value comes from shelled hazelnuts, meaning Georgia primarily enters international markets with processed and qualitatively more competitive products. This approach allows the country to increase the product’s value, enhancing farmers’ incomes and creating additional employment opportunities in rural regions.

Georgian hazelnuts are exported to a variety of markets, with a significant portion going to European Union countries. The primary export destinations for 2024 include Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and Poland. Additionally, Georgian hazelnuts are also exported to countries such as Armenia, Russia, Israel, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania.

The global hazelnut market is highly competitive, involving major producers like Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Italy. In such an environment, it’s essential for Georgia to improve product quality, adopt modern agricultural technologies, and expand its export markets. Enhanced branding and refined marketing strategies are also critical, ultimately helping Georgia further strengthen its international position in the hazelnut sector.
